After the Gunfight
After the gunfight, the city board of Alderman increased Dallas Stoudenmire's pay to $100 a month. Even though there was a series of peace after the fight, the peace did not last long. Bill Johnson, the ex-marshal, was stll holding a grudge against his successor , so he ambushed Dallas Stoudenmire while he was patroling with his brother in law Samuel "Doc" Cummings. Johnson tried to kill them by suprise but because he was so drunk, he shot both barrels of his shotgun into the sky. Dallas Stoudenmire then fired eight shots at Bill Johnson to finish him off. For some reason, the more people Dallas killed in an effort to clean up El Paso, the more people wanted him dead. Documents of Stoudenmire's term as marshal did not go without bad press. He would sometimes use the bell of St. Clemens church for target practice and was accused of using city funds without authorization to do so. When the city council found out about these issues, they faced a dillema to either keep Stoudenmire and risk him doing more things against the law or to take chances with a new marshal.
